A new school year at Culbreth: 2014-2015

It is another year at Culbreth Middle School and we are gearing up for some very exciting changes. We now have the Newcomer Center situated on campus at Culbreth with Shanna Stinehour teaching close to twenty newcomers. Ms. Collins and Ms. Anderson are teaching and co-teaching.

On Thursday we had Karen Family Night. This the the first of several get togethers that we will have this school year. We had many families turn out. Thanks to Mr. Straub and Ms. Mazva-Cohen we were able to share lots of valuable information that our non-English speaking families will need throughout the year. Ms. McGee, the eighth grade counselor was also present.

We were very happy to have Paw Say's mother, April Htoo's mother, Lwel's grandmother and Paw La La's grandfather and Hser Nay's father joined us. Many other families were represented as well.

It was also great to have Mr. Smith and his wife, Rosemary and Mr. Chris Johnson join us for the evening.

ESL party at Ms.Collins's House

It was a beautiful day at Ms. Collin's. Many of our students were there and so many of our volunteers, parents, and teachers came out to join in the fun. We made ice cream, ate pizza, enjoyed delicious parfaits and played games. There was a scavenger hunt and art projects.

Mr. Smith and his wife Rosemary came.  Mr. Kocher and his wife, Amy came and watched an energetic badminton game. Orlando and Raphael helped some of our students make bracelets and paint. Ms. Collin's daughter, Lutha Naw, helped out along with her friend, Noveline. Even some of our previous students were there.

What a great day we spent with our fantastic students.

Sihwan wins 2nd place in the Stock Market Game.

Sihwan Kim came to Culbreth in February from South Korea. He has worked very hard in all of his classes. He joined Ms. Motta's AIG chess club and also sign on to build a financial portfolio in the Stock Market Game. Sihwan's hard work has paid off. He was awarded second place in the Stock Market Game. Ms. Motta, Mr. Kim, Sihwan, and I traveled to Greensboro where all of the winners were honored. We were all very proud of Sihwan.

Culture Night at Culbreth

Culture Night was a big success. Ms. Collin's had a table with information about Denmark as well as the bikes her ESL II students made. Mu Eh, Dah Pet, and Paw La, had the Karen table. Ms. Anderson set up a table about her trip to India last summer. There were lots of great snacks and games.

Spring 2014

We've been busy this spring. And we've been having a great time in and outside of school. Several of our students signed up for the 5k for Fitness. Marwan and Frae Day Moo were strong finishers. Ms. Collins, Mr. Collins and I also crossed the finish line. There were also other participants from Culbreth.

Field Trip to Paradise

Ser Law Law, Frae Day Moo, Eh Hser Thaw, Dan and I made a trip to Greensboro to check out Foreign Cars Italia. What a day. We saw Ferraris, Porsches, Maseratis, and Aston Martins (my favorite). I think the boys were writing down a Christmas list as we were leaving. Lot's of great looking machines. Thanks to Scott for a very informative tour.
